The Northwood Difference
Northwood School, located in Lake Placid, New York, provides students with well-rounded educational experiences allowing them to succeed in college and beyond. As an independent prep school, we offer a trimester-based college preparatory curriculum for students grades nine (9) through twelve (12), plus a post-graduate year. The student body comprises 190 students from 24 countries and 21 states, eighty-five percent of whom live on campus as boarding students.
Our student-to-faculty ratio is 5:1, with an average class size of 10 students. With our smaller class sizes, our teachers are able to provide the extra support that is expected from private boarding schools. In addition to our traditional college-prep curriculum, we offer several signature programs such as L.E.A.P., Advanced Scholars, as well as programs such as Robotics, Innovation & Design, Entrepreneurial Studies at the new Innovation Hub on Main St. in the center of the Village of Lake Placid. Beyond the classroom, Northwood offers students competitive athletic programs and co-curricular programs in arts, music, outdoor recreation, and community service.
Since Northwood is located amongst the Adirondack Mountains, students have unique opportunities to engage with the natural world and incorporate our setting into their educational program. Mountain Day, a long-standing Northwood School tradition, sends our faculty and students up the mountains for a day of exploration and exercise during one of the most beautiful times of the year, fall. Problem-solving, compassion for others, teamwork, and appreciation for the Earth are just a few of the life lessons that this unique experience teaches our students.
Northwood School is unlike any other private boarding school in the United States. Its location is breathtakingly beautiful, and its educational experiences set students up for lifelong success, not to mention a lifetime of memories.
